Who counts as an eligible worker?

Wage subsidies apply to specific categories of jobseekers who face barriers to employment:

- Indigenous Australians — up to $10,000 available - People with disability — various levels depending on support needs - Mature workers (55+) — typically $750–$1,500 - Long-term unemployed (12+ months) — up to $10,000 - Youth (15–24 years) who have been unemployed — up to $6,500 - Recent school leavers in their first job — $1,500 via the First Nations and related programs

The Hiring Incentive (the successor to the Wage Subsidy program) provides up to $4,000 for eligible hires. Additional payments apply for specific categories.

How to access a wage subsidy

Wage subsidies are arranged through Workforce Australia (formerly Jobactive). The process:

1. Register your vacancy with Workforce Australia 2. A jobseeker matching the eligibility criteria applies 3. You hire them through a formal process 4. You receive confirmation of the subsidy amount 5. Payments are made over the employment period (often 6 months)

You can also approach the process directly: identify a candidate through your own channels, check their eligibility with their Workforce Australia provider, and arrange the subsidy before making a formal offer.

Common Questions

Can I claim a subsidy for someone I've already hired?

Generally no — subsidies must be arranged before the hire. Some exceptions apply for recent hires (check with Workforce Australia within the first few weeks).

Is there a minimum employment period?

Yes — most subsidies require the worker to remain employed for at least 26 weeks (6 months) for the full subsidy to be paid.

Program details change — always verify current eligibility criteria and application requirements on the official government website before applying.
